ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jim Buchman’s sculptures are produced through a process of casting and carving using a machine built by the artist. The column-like objects are cast out of cementitious material and carved while in a semi-solid state. The machine combines the technology of both the potter’s wheel and the lathe with that of a duplicating device resulting in the ability to place the carving tool, a rotating wire wheel, anywhere in an xyz axis. The profile begins as axially symmetrical and is worked spontaneously as it turns, using the many variations built into the machine, to end up with something that suggests an asymmetrical, figural gesture. Buchman is currently based in Memphis, TN.
